Elton is a small village within the historic boundaries of Huntingdonshire (now part of Cambridgeshire), England. It lies on the B671 road. Elton Hall and the hamlet of Over End are located on the same road a mile south of the village. In 1086 the ancient village of Elton was in the hundred of Willybrook〔(Victoria History: Willybrook Hundred )〕 in Huntingdonshire.〔(Open Domesday: Elton )〕 Following administrative border changes in the modern era, Elton since 1974 is within Cambridgeshire. It is situated on the B671 road, about eight miles south west of Peterborough. The hamlet of Over End is located a mile south of the village, on the same road. Elton is two miles away from Fotheringay, where Mary Queen of Scots was beheaded. It is also five miles away from Oundle, a historic market town which features the Talbot Inn. The Talbot Inn was built from the stones of the ruined Fotheringay Castle and features a wooden stairway taken from the castle. This stairway was the last stairway Mary walked down on the way to her execution. Close by is Elton Hall; an extraordinarily romantic, part Gothic house, which stands in the midst of unspoilt landscaped parkland. It offers a fascinating mix of styles and is surrounded by stunning gardens. There is also a garden centre to visit and the Loch Fyne restaurant that specialises in seafood. Elton Hall lies at the heart of a 3,800 acre Estate made up of farms, houses, cottages and commercial property, together with woodland. It was once connected to these places by Elton railway station which closed in 1953. It is now a popular walk. Elton has a school called Elton primary, a Loch Fine restaurant, which is connected to a Sharman & Quinney headquarters, the Crown Inn public house and an Indian restaurant. It has a garden centre with a cafe, and Elton Hall where Sir William Proby lives. there are many fields and walkways and livestock, and a pig farm where pigs are for sale, and a loch with a cow farm next to it. ==References==
